“Wayne Messmer brings Father Damien to life telling an unforgettable true story of love for one’s fellow man.”

Wayne Messmer stars in a one-man show by Aldyth Morri, that tells the true-life story of Father Damien, the Belgian missionary who volunteered to live, work and ultimately die among the outcast Lepers (Hansen’s Disease) who were exiled to a remote location on the Hawaiian Island of Molokai.

Damien tells the remarkable story of the Belgium-born priest who ministered to the lepers of the Hawaiian island of Molokai. Wanting the lepers to live out their lives in peace and beauty, Father Damien joins them on the island, where he builds homes, gardens, roads and docks along with them. He ministers and sings with them, all while enforcing discipline and morality. He fights local authorities and at times his own church to improve the lives of his beloved flock.

As Father Damien, Wayne Messmer portrays a man worthy of sainthood without shrouding himself in shallow piety. Damien is a tough, stubborn, angry and impatient man, whose very human traits are overshadowed by his passion to serve each of the men women and children banished and left to die without the barest of human caring, or dignity.

Often simply referred to as, "The Guy Who Sings the Anthem," Wayne Messmer has become a voice long associated with the National Anthem in Chicago, continuing to serve over 30 years with the Chicago Cubs. He is a founding partner of the Chicago Wolves Hockey Team and formerly, he was the celebrated soloist for 13 seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks at Old Chicago Stadium. His voice has also been heard with the Chicago Bears, Bulls, White Sox, Fire and countless major college sports, civic and corporate events in Chicago for well over 30 years. He is a veteran radio voice in Chicago and The Wayne Messmer Radio Show can be heard Sunday evenings from 7:00-8:00pm on WDCB 90.9FM/wdcb.org.

Wayne has taken on the role of Father Damien for over a decade carrying the message of this simple man to thousands of people.  Damien was the showcase theatrical presentation at the Grand Ballroom at Navy Pier as part of the Chicago Catholic Festival of Faith, and has also been performed in large churches and smaller venues across the country. Messmer has also made two trips to Hawaii to perform the Damien play to critical acclaim.
